Restored a 100 year old house

На тази страница

Some buildings are getting old.

Others build character.

When we stood in front of the house that we now know as Skabrin House, we knew that we were standing in front of more than just an architectural object, but a part of Bansko’s history. Built in 1923, it had survived a century of change, generations of families, and the transformation of a small mountain town into one of the most recognizable destinations in Bulgaria.

The challenge was not to renovate an old building.

The challenge was to preserve its spirit.

The first encounter with the house

Every old house bears the marks of time.

Here they were everywhere – in the wooden structures, in the stone foundations, in the traces of different periods and repairs accumulated over the decades.

However, behind the tired facade, something more valuable hid – authenticity.

We decided from the beginning that the restoration would not erase history.

On the contrary – she had to make it visible.

To preserve rather than replace

Modern renovations often begin with demolition.

Ours started with observation.

Before any element was replaced, every part of the house was carefully studied. The goal was to preserve as much of the original structure and characteristic architectural details as possible.

The old wood, the stone, the proportions of the rooms, and the atmosphere of the spaces were things that could not be recreated artificially.

They already existed.

Our task was to give them new life.

Balance between past and present

A historic house should be comfortable for people who live and travel today.

This meant carefully integrating modern solutions without them disrupting the character of the place.

Technology, comfort and functionality had to remain almost invisible.

Guests should feel the history, not the compromises.

Thus, the concept of Skabrin House gradually began to take shape – a place where traditional architecture and contemporary design can coexist.

Every detail matters.

During the restoration, we learned something important.

The big story lies in the small details.

In a preserved wooden beam.

In the texture of old stone.

In the light that comes in through the windows the same way it did decades ago.

It is these elements that create the feeling of authenticity.

They make a space real.

That’s why we didn’t strive for perfection.

We strived for honesty.

When the house started talking again

There is a moment in every restoration when the project ceases to be a construction site.

When it starts to look like a place.

For us, this moment came when the first spaces began to regain their character. When the old materials and new solutions found a common language. When the house began to seem alive again.

Then we realized that we were not creating anything new.

We are helping something valuable continue its story.

A century later

Today, guests see the completed space.

They see the tranquility, the atmosphere, and the attention to detail.

But behind each room lies a long process of research, restoration, and respect for the heritage of this place.

A hundred years after its construction, the house continues to fulfill its original mission – to welcome people.

But today the stories that are created in it come from different parts of the world.

And each of them becomes part of the next chapter of Skabrin House.
